Bill Title: Amends the Township Code. Provides that if the Secretary of State finds that any 2 or more townships within a single county (currently, 2 or more townships within the entire State) are named alike, he or she shall so inform the clerk of the county and the county board of that county shall, at its next meeting, adopt for one of the townships a different name. Effective immediately.

SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
60 ILCS 1/5-55

Amends the Township Code. Provides that if the Secretary of State finds that any 2 or more townships within a single county (currently, 2 or more townships within the entire State) are named alike, he or she shall so inform the clerk of the county and the county board of that county shall, at its next meeting, adopt for one of the townships a different name. Effective immediately.

1 AN ACT concerning local government.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The Township Code is amended by changing
5Section 5-55 as follows:
6 (60 ILCS 1/5-55)
7 Sec. 5-55. Duplicate township names. If the Secretary of
8State, on comparing the abstracts of the reports from the
9several counties, finds that any 2 or more townships within a
10single county are named alike, he or she shall so inform the
11clerk of the county which last adopted the name. The county
12board of that county shall, at its next meeting, adopt for one
13of the townships a the township some different name. When the
14name is adopted, the county clerk shall inform the Secretary
15of State as provided in Section 5-50.

17 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
