HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to honor our esteemed colleague,
4State Representative Edward Acevedo, on his 20 years as a
5member of the Illinois General Assembly and to thank him for
6his dedicated service to his State and his community; and
7 WHEREAS, Representative Acevedo was born and raised in the
8district he represents and where he raised his five sons; he
9earned his degree from Harold Washington College, was educated
10at the Academy of the Cook County Sheriff's Department and the
11Academy of the Chicago Police Department, and has served the
12State and the City of Chicago as a police officer; and
13 WHEREAS, Representative Acevedo was decorated for heroism,
14receiving the Award of Valor from the Cook County Sheriff's
15Office for rescuing victims trapped in a fire; and
16 WHEREAS, Representative Acevedo was first elected to the
17Illinois House of Representatives in 1997, and is the longest
18serving Latino member of the Illinois General Assembly; and
19 WHEREAS, Representative Acevedo secured millions of
20dollars in funding for programs and organizations within the
21Second Representative District, including the Instituto Health

1Sciences Career Academy (IHSCA), which is the first dedicated
2career academy in the State; La Casa, which is the first
3off-campus student housing with the benefits of on-campus
4residence halls, near all major universities in Chicago; he
5sponsored and led passage of the Kid Care Health Program, a
6low-cost health insurance program for children, and the State
7Hispanic Employment Plan; and
8 WHEREAS, Representative Acevedo was the driving force
9behind legislation to grant temporary driver's licenses to
10undocumented immigrants, making our roadways safer and
11creating better drivers; and
12 WHEREAS, Representative Acevedo sponsored the Illinois
13Dream Act, historical legislation designed to make
14scholarships, college savings, and prepaid tuition programs
15available to undocumented students who graduated from Illinois
16high schools, providing opportunities for students who would
17otherwise not be able to attend college; he has worked to be an
18advocate for the enhancement of our children's education and he
19continues to push for legislation that will provide the best
20educational experience for all Illinois children; and
21 WHEREAS, All who served with Representative Acevedo will
22miss his tenacity and strong, quiet but determined leadership
23to better the lives of the residents of his district and those

1of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it
2 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
4congratulate and honor State Representative Edward Acevedo for
5his dedicated service as a member of the Illinois House of
6Representatives; and be it further
7 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to Representative Acevedo as an expression of our
9respect, esteem, and best wishes.
