2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
| ||||||
4 | Washington Dunbar Burney; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney was born on April 14, | ||||||
6 | 1916; his parents were John Calvin Burney and Elvina Moody | ||||||
7 | Burney of Eastman, Georgia; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney was a dedicated member of | ||||||
9 | the Trustee Board and Men's Fellowship at Park Manor United | ||||||
10 | Church of Christ for almost 50 years; he and family were well | ||||||
11 | known for never missing church; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney was a community leader | ||||||
13 | from the beginning of his life; he was the first black member | ||||||
14 | of Teamsters Union Local 744 in 1938 and the first black driver | ||||||
15 | salesman for Budweiser in 1951; he served as president and | ||||||
16 | co-founder of the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council for | ||||||
17 | many years, helping Chatham to become a community of | ||||||
18 | excellence; he was involved in numerous elections; he also | ||||||
19 | pioneered the breakdown of racial barriers in area golf | ||||||
20 | courses; and

21 | WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney enjoyed and excelled in |

1 | the sport of golf; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney was the loving and | ||||||
3 | devoted husband of Lillie Rose; he was also married to Vivian | ||||||
4 | McEwen Jones for over 40 years; the brother of Flossie, | ||||||
5 | Rosella, and Trelle; the father of Diedre-Rkhty Jones (Wayne), | ||||||
6 | Marcia Aldington (Thomas), and Washington Dunbar Burney Jr. and | ||||||
7 | father figure of Wanda Reason (David); the loving grandfather | ||||||
8 | of Marcia-Amunet Wimby, Yoko Wimby, Stacy Carter (Winston), | ||||||
9 | Kyle Arrington, Khami-Ra Jones, Jennifer Avery and Anthony | ||||||
10 | (Tony) Gant; and the great-grandfather of Neferteri Amun, | ||||||
11 | Nunera Amun, Jordan Wimby, Sydney Arlington, Autumn Gant, and | ||||||
12 | Anthony Gant Jr.; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney will be remembered | ||||||
14 | fondly by all who knew and loved him for his warm personality, | ||||||
15 | easy-going smile, and great charisma; therefore, be it
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
17 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
18 | mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of | ||||||
19 | Washington Dunbar Burney; and be it further
| ||||||
20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
21 | presented to the family of Washington Dunbar Burney as an | ||||||
22 | expression of our sympathy.
