| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of former | ||||||
4 | United States Representative Lane Evans, who passed away on | ||||||
5 | November 5, 2014; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans was born on August 4, | ||||||
7 | 1951; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans was a graduate of | ||||||
9 | Alleman High School in Rock Island; he subsequently earned | ||||||
10 | degrees from Augustana College and Georgetown University Law | ||||||
11 | Center; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans served his country with | ||||||
13 | distinction in the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to | ||||||
14 | 1977; during his stint in the military, he was posted in the | ||||||
15 | United States and in Okinawa, Japan; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans served the citizens of | ||||||
17 | the 17th Congressional District with pride as a member of the | ||||||
18 | United States House of Representatives from 1982 to 2006; | ||||||
19 | during his career as a Representative, he became well known by | ||||||
20 | his constituents and peers as a man of the people who cared | ||||||
21 | deeply for the well-being of his fellow veterans; and

1 | WHEREAS, As a ranking member of the House Committee on | ||||||
2 | Veterans' Affairs, Representative Lane Evans advocated for | ||||||
3 | veterans of the Vietnam War who were exposed to Agent Orange | ||||||
4 | and helped them to receive compensation for their exposure to | ||||||
5 | the chemical agents; he led efforts to increase funding for | ||||||
6 | various veteran assistance programs and was among the first | ||||||
7 | members of Congress to take on issues like post-traumatic | ||||||
8 | stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, which have affected | ||||||
9 | many veterans of the Iraq War; he also championed numerous | ||||||
10 | other initiatives, including legislation to ban landmines and | ||||||
11 | the fight to keep the Rock Island Arsenal open, and was lauded | ||||||
12 | for his votes against the North American Free Trade Agreement, | ||||||
13 | the Gulf War, and the Iraq War; and

14 | WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans is survived by his 3 | ||||||
15 | brothers; therefore, be it
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
17 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
18 | we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of | ||||||
19 | former United States Representative Lane Evans; and be it | ||||||
20 | further

21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
22 | presented to the family of Representative Lane Evans as an |
