| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The Potawatomi Trail of Death was the forced | ||||||
3 | removal by militia in 1838 of approximately 859 members of the | ||||||
4 | Potawatomi nation from Indiana to reservation lands in what is | ||||||
5 | now eastern Kansas; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, During the journey to Kansas, 42 people died, 28 | ||||||
7 | of them children; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, The Trail of Death passed through Decatur in what | ||||||
9 | is now Mueller Park; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, A historical marker known as The Rock was placed | ||||||
11 | in Mueller Park on Lake Shore Drive in 1994 by Zita and Bernard | ||||||
12 | Wright to commemorate the trail; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, There is no road sign directing people to the | ||||||
14 | historical marker; therefore, be it
| ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
16 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
17 | the Illinois Department of Transportation
is requested to | ||||||
18 | erect at suitable locations, consistent with
State and federal | ||||||
19 | regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
directing people to | ||||||
20 | the location of the Trail of Death historical marker; and be it |
