HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Potawatomi Trail of Death was the forced
3removal by militia in 1838 of approximately 859 members of the
4Potawatomi nation from Indiana to reservation lands in what is
5now eastern Kansas; and
6 WHEREAS, During the journey to Kansas, 42 people died, 28
7of them children; and
8 WHEREAS, The Trail of Death passed through Decatur in what
9is now Mueller Park; and
10 WHEREAS, A historical marker known as The Rock was placed
11in Mueller Park on Lake Shore Drive in 1994 by Zita and Bernard
12Wright to commemorate the trail; and
13 WHEREAS, There is no road sign directing people to the
14historical marker; therefore, be it
15 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
16HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17the Illinois Department of Transportation is requested to
18erect at suitable locations, consistent with State and federal
19regulations, appropriate plaques or signs directing people to
20the location of the Trail of Death historical marker; and be it
