| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The boards of trustees of the University of | ||||||
3 | Illinois and The John Marshall Law
School have voted to approve | ||||||
4 | the acquisition of The John Marshall Law School by the
| ||||||
5 | University of Illinois at Chicago, and the first entering class | ||||||
6 | of the new UIC John Marshall Law
School is expected to | ||||||
7 | matriculate in fall 2019; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, The UIC John Marshall Law School will be the only | ||||||
9 | public law school located in
Chicago; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The University of Illinois at Chicago is the | ||||||
11 | city's only public research university, is
one of the most | ||||||
12 | diverse research universities in the country, and is an | ||||||
13 | integral part of
Chicago's educational, technological, and | ||||||
14 | cultural fabric; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The John Marshall Law School, founded in 1899, has | ||||||
16 | been a pioneer in legal
education with top-ranked programs in | ||||||
17 | lawyering skills, trial advocacy, and intellectual
property; | ||||||
18 | it is one of the most diverse law schools in the country and | ||||||
19 | has a long history of
giving back to the community by providing | ||||||
20 | pro bono legal services; and

21 | WHEREAS, Both the University of Illinois at Chicago and The |

| |||||||
1 | John Marshall Law School have
track records of excellence in | ||||||
2 | research and scholarship, access for underserved students, and
| ||||||
3 | service to Chicago and its people; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, The acquisition will create opportunities for | ||||||
5 | interdisciplinary courses and new joint
and dual-degree | ||||||
6 | programs aligned with UIC strengths in multiple disciplines, | ||||||
7 | such as the health
sciences, engineering and technology, urban | ||||||
8 | planning and public administration, social
sciences, and | ||||||
9 | business; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, University of Illinois at Chicago students will | ||||||
11 | benefit from expanded research and
program offerings, such as | ||||||
12 | access to law courses and opportunities to take classes jointly
| ||||||
13 | taught by law school and other UIC faculty; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, The acquisition will provide current and | ||||||
15 | prospective Illinois law students with a more
affordable legal | ||||||
16 | education and enhanced student services, including access to | ||||||
17 | health care
services, recreational facilities, residence | ||||||
18 | halls, and college athletics; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, The establishment of the UIC John Marshall Law | ||||||
20 | School complements other university
efforts to advance | ||||||
21 | innovation and opportunity in higher education, such as the | ||||||
22 | recent openings
of UIC's Engineering Innovation Building and |

1 | Academic and Residential Complex to address UIC's
continued | ||||||
2 | growth and record enrollment gains; therefore, be it
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
4 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
5 | we support the establishment of Chicago's public law school, | ||||||
6 | the UIC John Marshall Law School; and be it further
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to the UIC John Marshall Law School.
