HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Throughout our history, America has welcomed
3millions of Polish immigrants to its shores, and those proud
4people arrived seeking a better life for themselves, their
5families, and future generations; and
6 WHEREAS, This year marks the 403rd anniversary of Polish
7settlers arriving in the United States of America; and
8 WHEREAS, People of Polish heritage will mark the 232nd
9anniversary of the death of General Casimir Pulaski, father of
10the American cavalry, and the 100th anniversary of Marie
11Sklodowska Curie's receipt of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for
12her discovery of the radioactive elements polonium and radium;
13and
14 WHEREAS, People of Polish heritage have contributed
15greatly to global advancement and advancement of the United
16States, and the State of Illinois in particular, during the 403
17years since the first Polish immigrants settled here; and
18 WHEREAS, Polish notables include Ignacy Jan Paderewski,
19one of the most famous and popular pianists of all time;
20Casimir Pulaski and Thaddesus Kosciuszko, heroes of the
21American Revolution; Leopold Stokowski, a renowned

1international conductor; Zbigniew Brzezinski, National
2Security Advisor to President Carter; and Edmund Muskie, a
3United States Senator from Maine; and
4 WHEREAS, The Polish people have many reasons to be proud of
5and to celebrate their heritage, culture, and the achievements
6of their people; and
7 WHEREAS, All Illinoisans are grateful for the many
8contributions of Poland and its citizens to our state;
9therefore, be it
10 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we designate October of 2011 as Polish-American Heritage Month
13in the State of Illinois and urge the citizens of this State to
14observe this month by learning about and commemorating the
15contributions of Polish Americans to our nation, our State, and
16our local communities; and be it further
17 RESOLVED, That we urge the Governor of Illinois to issue a
18suitable proclamation recognizing the contributions of Polish
19Americans to Illinois and to proclaim October of 2011 as
20Polish-American Heritage Month.
