HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
4Lieutenant Aaron R. Landers of St. Joseph, who passed away on
5August 22, 2021; and
6 WHEREAS, Lt. Landers served as a police officer for the
7University of Illinois Police Department and the campus
8community for 24 years; he was named supervisor of the
9department's new Community Outreach and Support Team in 2020,
10which is tasked with providing educational programming for the
11campus community, support resources, community engagement, and
12mental health crisis intervention; he also served on the
13University of Illinois Bomb Squad and was recently appointed
14its commander; and
15 WHEREAS, Lt. Landers recently acquired K-9 Winston, a
16therapy dog with the University of Illinois Police Department;
17together, they traveled to Chicago to provide comfort to
18members of the Chicago Police Department following the
19line-of-duty death of Chicago Police Officer Ella French; they
20visited the Champaign Police Department several times earlier
21this year following the line-of-duty death of Champaign Police
22Officer Chris Oberheim; and

1 WHEREAS, Lt. Landers earned several awards throughout his
2career, including two life-saving awards, the Excellence in
3Community Policing Award, and the Director of Public Safety
4Recognition Award; and
5 WHEREAS, Lt. Landers was an avid bicyclist and rode in the
6annual Cycle Across Illinois event to benefit the Concerns of
7Police Survivors (COPS) nonprofit organization; he completed
8this year's 340-mile ride through the state in July; and
9 WHEREAS, Lt. Landers was a dedicated public servant; he
10will be remembered for his character, his optimism, and his
11service to the community; therefore, be it
12 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
13HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we mourn the passing of Lieutenant Aaron R. Landers and extend
15our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who
16knew and loved him; and be it further
17 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Lt. Landers as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
