| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate the owners and employees | ||||||
4 | of the Centralia Sentinel on the occasion of the newspaper's | ||||||
5 | 150th anniversary; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Centralia Sentinel was founded in 1863, during the | ||||||
7 | Civil War; the newspaper's first editions were hand-pressed; | ||||||
8 | the Sentinel was founded only 10 years after the city of | ||||||
9 | Centralia was settled, allowing the city and its paper to grow | ||||||
10 | up together; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, In 1888, Thomas Joy purchased the Centralia | ||||||
12 | Sentinel, beginning a lineage that continues to this day; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, The Centralia Sentinel was incorporated on July 1, | ||||||
14 | 1947 as Joy Publishing; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The Sentinel Building, located on East Broadway in | ||||||
16 | Centralia, was placed on the Federal Register of Historic | ||||||
17 | Places in the spring of 1978; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the Joy and Perrine families | ||||||
19 | have been very supportive of philanthropic causes in the | ||||||
20 | Centralia community, most notably the Centralia Foundation, |

1 | which was established in 1943; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The Centralia Sentinel serves as a model of | ||||||
3 | integrity and honesty for the newspapers and citizens of the | ||||||
4 | State of Illinois; therefore, be it

5 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
6 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
7 | we congratulate the owners and employees of the Centralia | ||||||
8 | Sentinel on the occasion of the newspaper's 150th anniversary | ||||||
9 | and wish them continued success and happiness in the future; | ||||||
10 | and be it further

11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
12 | presented to John Perrine, publisher of the Centralia Sentinel, | ||||||
13 | as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
