| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to recognize the 40th anniversary of the | ||||||
4 | Glen Ellyn Area Alumnae Chapter (GEAAC) of Delta Sigma Theta | ||||||
5 | Sorority, Inc. on February 18, 2017; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, GEAAC is a group of college educated women who | ||||||
7 | hold various careers, and who work together as
an organization | ||||||
8 | to enrich the lives of others; they have awarded hundreds of
| ||||||
9 | college scholarships to deserving young men and women seeking | ||||||
10 | to further their education; they have provided countless hours | ||||||
11 | of community service, using their collective talents and | ||||||
12 | resources to provide free
programs, assistance, and services | ||||||
13 | throughout the western suburbs of Chicago; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, GEAAC was conceived over brown bag lunches at | ||||||
15 | Irving
School in Maywood in 1976; it was chartered in January | ||||||
16 | of 1977 by 24 women and now has over 250 members; it serves the | ||||||
17 | western suburbs of Chicago,
including towns in Cook, DuPage, | ||||||
18 | Kane, Kendall, Will, and DeKalb counties; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, During the early years, some of GEAAC's public | ||||||
20 | service projects included, food baskets for families in need at
| ||||||
21 | Thanksgiving and Christmas, weekly story hour at Loyola's | ||||||
22 | Children's Hospital, serving and assisting in
shelters, Toy |

1 | Disco, assistance at the Baptist Nursing Home, book drives, | ||||||
2 | compiling and submitting lists of
African-American books to | ||||||
3 | public schools, and contributions to the DuPage County NAACP; | ||||||
4 | and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The first major
fundraiser for GEAAC was a talent | ||||||
6 | competition in 1979 known as Miss Jabberwock; over the years | ||||||
7 | programs, outreach, and community partnerships have been | ||||||
8 | expanded
to help meet the needs of the community, including | ||||||
9 | hosting the Mental Health
Resource Fair and community | ||||||
10 | discussions at Riveredge Hospital; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on | ||||||
12 | January 13, 1913 as a non-profit organization whose purpose is | ||||||
13 | to
provide assistance and support through established programs | ||||||
14 | in local communities throughout the world; a sisterhood of more | ||||||
15 | than 300,000 predominately Black college-educated women; it | ||||||
16 | currently has over
1,000 chapters located in the United States, | ||||||
17 | England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin
Islands, Bermuda, the | ||||||
18 | Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; therefore, be it

19 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
20 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
21 | recognize the 40th anniversary of the Glen Ellyn Area Alumnae | ||||||
22 | Chapter (GEAAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and we | ||||||
23 | wish them many more successful years; and be it further
