| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Many places in the State of Illinois are | ||||||
| 3 | significant sites of local, State, national, and world history; | ||||||
| 4 | and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Visitors to these sites learn about historic | ||||||
| 6 | people, ideas, and events that occurred there; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Such visits deepen our interest in, and | ||||||
| 8 | appreciation of, history; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, History helps us understand our place in the world | ||||||
| 10 | and how we might improve upon it; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Increasing the number of visitors at historic | ||||||
| 12 | sites will stimulate beautification, preservation, | ||||||
| 13 | conservation, tourism, and business in the Illinois | ||||||
| 14 | communities and counties where those sites are located; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, The Illinois State Historical Society, recognized | ||||||
| 16 | by the Illinois General Assembly in 1903 as a major contributor | ||||||
| 17 | to the awareness and appreciation of history in Illinois, has | ||||||
| 18 | already placed its markers at more than 400 historic sites | ||||||
| 19 | around the State; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, The Illinois State Historical Society is the only | ||||||
| 2 | statewide not-for-profit historical organization; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, The Illinois General Assembly and the Illinois | ||||||
| 4 | State Historical Society now seek to heighten historical | ||||||
| 5 | awareness in Illinois residents and visitors by calling | ||||||
| 6 | attention to these markers and historic sites throughout the | ||||||
| 7 | State; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 8 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 9 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 10 | we designate the week of February 28 - March 6, 2011 as | ||||||
| 11 | Illinois State Historical Society Markers Awareness Week in the | ||||||
| 12 | State of Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
| 13 | RESOLVED, That all Illinois residents and visitors are | ||||||
| 14 | encouraged to celebrate this week by visiting the Historical | ||||||
| 15 | Markers Web site at www.historyillinois.org, learning about | ||||||
| 16 | historic sites in their locales, visiting those sites, | ||||||
| 17 | reflecting on their importance in history, communicating with | ||||||
| 18 | others about them, and attending ceremonies commemorating | ||||||
| 19 | them; and be it further
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That the members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 21 | Representatives are encouraged to participate in the events of | ||||||
| 22 | this week with their colleagues in the Illinois State Capitol | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | and their constituents in their home districts.
