HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Lance
4Corporal Alec E. Catherwood of Byron, who gave his life
5defending America's freedom on October 14, 2010, in the Helmand
6province of southern Afghanistan; and
7 WHEREAS, Alec E. Catherwood was born on May 6, 1991 in
8Heilbronn, Germany, to Kirk and Gretchen Catherwood; and
9 WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Catherwood was a member of the
10Future Farmers of America, in which he served as a Sentinel; he
11was a member of the Boy Scouts of America; and he held a black
12belt in tae kwon do; and
13 WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Catherwood graduated in 2009 from
14Bryon High School and enlisted in the United States Marines
15Corps on June 1, 2009, where he had wanted to serve since he
16was 3 years old; and
17 WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Catherwood was deployed to
18Afghanistan to serve his first combat tour of duty and had
19talked about re-enlisting; and
20 WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Catherwood's awards and

1decorations include the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon,
2the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service
3Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; and
4 WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Catherwood will be missed by his
5parents, Kirk and Gretchen Catherwood; his sister, Mikaela
6Montgomery; his fiancee, Hailey Patrick, whom he was to marry
7on July 2, 2011; as well as his fellow soldiers and the
8citizens of a grateful nation; therefore, be it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
12Lance Corporal Alec E. Catherwood; and be it further
13 RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Lance Corporal Alec
14E. Catherwood and his willingness to serve his country, which
15led to him making the ultimate sacrifice; and be it further
16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Lance Corporal Alec E. Catherwood as
18a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
