1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, A brain aneurysm is a weak, bulging area in an | ||||||
3 | artery in the brain, much like a thin balloon or a weak spot on | ||||||
4 | the inner tube of a tire; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, There are almost 500,000 deaths worldwide each | ||||||
6 | year caused by brain aneurysms with half the victims being | ||||||
7 | younger than 50; Of those who survive, approximately 66 | ||||||
8 | percent suffer some permanent neurological deficit; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In the United States, one in every 50 people has | ||||||
10 | an unruptured brain aneurysm; every year, 30,000 Americans | ||||||
11 | suffer a brain aneurysm rupture, which equate to one every 18 | ||||||
12 | minutes; ruptured aneurysms are fatal in approximately 50% of | ||||||
13 | the cases; and

14 | WHEREAS, Risk factors for developing brain aneurysms | ||||||
15 | include cigarette use, chronic hypertension, and a history of | ||||||
16 | cerebral aneurysms in closely related family members; women | ||||||
17 | are at a greater risk than men at a ratio of three to two, and | ||||||
18 | African Americans and Hispanics are twice as likely to have a | ||||||
19 | brain aneurysm rupture; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Through innovative screening techniques, | ||||||
21 | individuals at high risk of harboring a brain aneurysm can be |

1 | identified easily with non-invasive imaging tests; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Brain aneurysms are treatable and beatable if | ||||||
3 | people know the facts; therefore, be it
| ||||||
4 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
5 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
6 | we declare September 2021 as Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month in | ||||||
7 | the State of Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That we recognize the importance of improving | ||||||
9 | public
awareness regarding brain aneurysms to educate our | ||||||
10 | citizens and save lives.
