1 | HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, On September 1, 1961, just after two in the | ||||||
3 | morning, Trans World Airlines Flight 529 took off from Midway | ||||||
4 | Airport bound for Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Five minutes into the flight, a two-inch long | ||||||
7 | bolt snapped in the plane's elevator assembly, which caused | ||||||
8 | the plane to crash in what is today Willowbrook, Illinois; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, TWA Flight 529 crashed into an open field and | ||||||
10 | immediately burst into flames, leaving behind a debris field | ||||||
11 | of 200 by 1,100 feet; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, 73 passengers, four of whom were from the Chicago | ||||||
13 | land area, and five crew members were all killed on impact, | ||||||
14 | making the crash of TWA Flight 529 the deadliest single plane | ||||||
15 | crash at the time; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, The four Chicago area victims were a pharmacist | ||||||
17 | from Evanston who was on his way to visit his parents in Los | ||||||
18 | Angeles, a nurse from MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn departing for | ||||||
19 | a vacation in San Francisco, and two servicemen returning to | ||||||
20 | duty in California; and

1 | WHEREAS, September 1 of 2021 will mark the 60 year | ||||||
2 | anniversary of this tragedy; therefore, be it

3 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
4 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | ||||||
5 | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare September 1, 2021 as | ||||||
6 | Trans World Airlines Flight 529 Memorial Day in the State of | ||||||
7 | Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That we remember and mourn those we lost on that | ||||||
9 | tragic day in 1961 and extend our sincere condolences to their | ||||||
10 | families and friends.
