Bill Title: Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that the Secretary of State may issue special registration plates to the surviving spouse and parents (instead of surviving spouse, or, if no spouse exists, the parents) of a police officer or firefighter who has died in the line of duty. Effective January 1, 2013.

1 | AN ACT concerning transportation.
| ||||||
2 | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
| ||||||
3 | represented in the General Assembly:
| ||||||
4 | Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing | ||||||
5 | Section 3-641 as follows:
| ||||||
6 | (625 ILCS 5/3-641)
| ||||||
7 | Sec. 3-641. Deceased police officer or firefighter plates.
| ||||||
8 | (a) The Secretary,
upon
receipt of all applicable fees and | ||||||
9 | applications made in the
form prescribed by the Secretary, may | ||||||
10 | issue
special registration plates to the surviving spouse and | ||||||
11 | or, if no spouse exists,
the parents of a police officer or | ||||||
12 | firefighter who has died in the line of
duty in this State. The | ||||||
13 | special plates issued
pursuant to this Section shall be affixed | ||||||
14 | only to passenger vehicles of
the first division or motor | ||||||
15 | vehicles of the second division weighing not
more than 8,000 | ||||||
16 | pounds.

17 | Plates issued under this Section shall expire according to | ||||||
18 | the multi-year
procedure established by Section 3-414.1 of this | ||||||
19 | Code.
| ||||||
20 | (b) The design and color of the special plates shall be | ||||||
21 | wholly within the
discretion of
the Secretary. Appropriate | ||||||
22 | documentation, as determined by the
Secretary, shall accompany | ||||||
23 | each application.

1 | (c) An applicant for the special plate shall be charged a | ||||||
2 | $15 fee for
original issuance in addition to the appropriate | ||||||
3 | registration fee. This
additional fee shall be deposited into | ||||||
4 | the Secretary of State Special License
Plate Fund, to be used | ||||||
5 | by the Secretary to help defray the administrative
processing | ||||||
6 | costs.

7 | For each registration renewal period, a $2 fee, in addition | ||||||
8 | to the
appropriate registration fee, shall be charged. This | ||||||
9 | additional fee shall be
deposited into the Secretary of State | ||||||
10 | Special License Plate Fund.

12 | Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect January | ||||||
13 | 1, 2013.
