Bill Title: Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that, in addition to any other fine or penalty, a law enforcement official may impound the motor vehicle of any person operating that vehicle without insurance. Requires the Secretary of State to establish and maintain a database of all motor vehicles determined by the Secretary to be uninsured and requires that this database be available to federal, state, and local law-enforcement agencies.

625 ILCS 5/7-606.5 new
625 ILCS 5/7-607.5 new

Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that, in addition to any other fine or penalty, a law enforcement official may impound the motor vehicle of any person operating that vehicle without insurance. Requires the Secretary of State to establish and maintain a database of all motor vehicles determined by the Secretary to be uninsured and requires that this database be available to federal, state, and local law-enforcement agencies.

1 AN ACT concerning transportation.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5 Sections 7-606.5 and 7-607.5 as follows:
6 (625 ILCS 5/7-606.5 new)
7 Sec. 7-606.5. Uninsured motorist database. The Secretary
8 of State shall establish and maintain a database of all motor
9 vehicles determined by the Secretary to be in violation of
10 Section 7-601 of this Code. This database must be available to
11 federal, state, and local law-enforcement agencies.

13 Sec. 7-607.5. Impounding uninsured vehicles. In addition
14 to any other fine or penalty under this Code, a law enforcement
15 official may impound the motor vehicle of any person operating
16 that vehicle in violation of subsection (a) of Section 7-601.
