  1  1    Section 1.  Section 509B.3, subsection 6, paragraph a, Code
  1  2 2018, is amended to read as follows:
  1  3    a.  Nine Eighteen months after the date the employee's
  1  4 or member's insurance under the policy would otherwise have
  1  5 terminated because of termination of employment or membership.
  1  6                           EXPLANATION
  1  7 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
  1  8 the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly.
  1  9    This bill relates to continuation of group health insurance
  1 10 after an individual's termination of employment or membership.
  1 11 This applies to group accident or health policies or contracts
  1 12 issued pursuant to Code chapter 509 or 514, or a plan for
  1 13 health care services provided pursuant to Code chapter 514B.
  1 14    Currently, continuation of coverage terminates nine months
  1 15 after the date an employee's or member's coverage under the
  1 16 policy would have otherwise terminated due to termination of
  1 17 the individual's employment or membership. The bill extends
  1 18 the period of continuation of coverage to 18 months.
