SENATE RESOLUTION
urging the Executive Office on Aging to conduct a study on the impacts of an aging population in Hawaii.
WHEREAS, Hawaii's aging population is expected to increase during feature years; and
WHEREAS, seventeen percent of Hawaii's existing population consists of seniors, sixty-five years of age and older; and
WHEREAS, a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Hawaii has the highest life expectancy in the United States for those over sixty-five years of age; and
WHEREAS, the State's total unfunded pension and health benefit liabilities total nearly $24,000,000,000; and
WHEREAS, public employees of the baby boomer generation will continue to retire over the next fifteen years; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii needs to develop plans and set policies to ensure that the State is prepared for a large aging population; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2018, that the Executive Office on Aging is urged to conduct a study on the impacts of an aging population in Hawaii and submit a report of its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2019; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the report is requested to include:
(1) Impacts of an aging population to the State's unfunded liabilities;
(2) Future government services that potentially will be needed; and
(3) Recommendations on what is needed to prevent adverse impacts of an aging population; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Director of the Executive Office on Aging.
