SENATE RESOLUTION
requesting the committee on weights and the board of education to consider the unique needs of remote schools when reevaluating the weighted student formula.
WHEREAS, Act 51, Session Laws of Hawaii 2004, established a weighted student formula to allocate monies to schools based upon the unique learning needs of each student; and
WHEREAS, the weighted student formula provides school funding on a per pupil basis; and
WHEREAS, remote schools are more expensive to operate, per pupil, compared to more populous schools; and
WHEREAS, remote schools are at a funding disadvantage due to their relatively small student populations; and
WHEREAS, public high school students statewide are subject to the same graduation requirements and need access to various courses, including electives, to graduate; and
WHEREAS, remote schools struggle to regularly provide the breadth of courses necessary for students to meet graduation requirements due to the funding constraints of the weighted student formula; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, that the Committee on Weights and Board of Education are requested to consider the unique needs of remote schools when reevaluating the weighted student formula; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Education, and Chairperson of the Committee on Weights.
