SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

Recognizing National Speech and debate education day on March 3, 2017.

 

 


     WHEREAS, each year the National Speech and Debate Association designates a day to be celebrated as National Speech and Debate Education Day; and

 

     WHEREAS, National Speech and Debate Education Day will be celebrated on March 3, 2017; and

 

     WHEREAS, National Speech and Debate Education Day is established by the National Speech and Debate Association in conjunction with national and local partners; promotes better instruction in speech and debate across all grade levels; and highlights the pivotal role that these speech and debate skills play in personal advocacy, social movements, and public policy making; and

 

     WHEREAS, speech and debate education helps students develop crucial skills in communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration through the practice of public speaking; and

 

     WHEREAS, speech and debate education participants learn how to analyze and express complex ideas effectively while also learning to listen, concur, question, or dissent with reason and compassion; and

 

     WHEREAS, across the country, countless educators devote in-school, after-school, and weekend time to support students in speech and debate practice and competition; and

 

     WHEREAS, the example of hard work and dedication set by speech and debate educators has a lasting and positive impact on pupils; and

 

     WHEREAS, the skills learned through speech and debate education serve students throughout their lives, and the chance to celebrate National Speech and Debate Education Day on March 3 this year presents a welcome opportunity to recognize such instruction and education as essential components of a well-rounded curriculum; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, the House of Representatives concurring, that this body recognizes March 3, 2017, as National Speech and Debate Education Day; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor.
