SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the university of hawaii to support the establishment of a collective bargaining unit for graduate student assistants employed at the university.

 

 

     WHEREAS, graduate student assistants perform a variety of teaching and research functions that are necessary and vital to the overall strength and accomplishments of a successful university; and

 

     WHEREAS, at research universities, such as the University of Hawaii at Manoa, graduate student assistants are in the trenches, collaborating on research with faculty members that often leads to innovative ideas; and

 

     WHEREAS, graduate student assistants at the University of Hawaii receive tuition waivers and stipends as compensation, but budget shortfalls have increased class size and workload, which has increased the burden on the graduate student assistants; and

 

     WHEREAS, graduate student assistants at the University of Hawaii are not currently authorized to organize to advocate for their own employment rights or negotiate for fair salaries and benefits; and

 

     WHEREAS, authorizing graduate student assistants at the University of Hawaii to organize will assist those individuals in improving their pay and employment benefits; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, the House of Representatives concurring, that the University of Hawaii is urged to support the establishment of a collective bargaining unit for graduate student assistants employed by the University; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chair of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii and President of the University of Hawaii.
