SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

declaring february 6, 2011 as ronald reagan day in honor of the centennial anniversary of his birth.

 

 

     WHEREAS, President Ronald Wilson Reagan, a man of humble background, worked throughout his life serving freedom and advancing the public good as an entertainer, union leader, corporate spokesman, governor of California, and President of the United States; and

 

     WHEREAS, President Reagan served with honor and distinction for two terms as the fortieth President of the United States, the second of which he achieved with the confidence of three-fifths of the electorate and victory in forty-nine of the fifty states in the general election, a record unsurpassed in the history of American presidential elections; and

 

     WHEREAS, upon his inauguration in 1981, when President Reagan inherited a disillusioned nation shackled by rampant inflation and high unemployment; and

 

     WHEREAS, during President Reagan's tenure, he worked in a bipartisan manner to enact his bold agenda of restoring accountability and common sense to government, which led to an unprecedented economic expansion and opportunities for millions of Americans; and

 

     WHEREAS, President Reagan's commitment to an active social policy agenda for the nation's children helped lower neighborhood crime and drug use; and

 

     WHEREAS, President Reagan's commitment to the armed forces contributed to the restoration of pride in America and its values and those cherished by the free world, and it prepared America's armed forces to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century; and

 

     WHEREAS, President Reagan once said:

 

"The American dream lives-not only in the hearts and minds of our own countrymen but in the hearts and minds of millions of the world's people in both free and oppressed societies who look to us for leadership.  As long as that dream lives, as long as we continue to defend it, America has a future, and all mankind has reason to hope."; and

 

     WHEREAS, President Reagan's vision of peace through strength led to the end of the Cold War and the ultimate demise of the Soviet Union, guaranteeing basic human rights for millions of people; and

 

     WHEREAS, February 6, 2011, will mark the one hundredth anniversary of President Reagan's birth; now, therefore,

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, the House of Representatives concurring, that February 6, 2011 be designated as President Ronald Reagan Day by the legislature in honor of the centennial of his birth; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all citizens are urged to reflect and honor the legacy of President Ronald Wilson Reagan and participate in observance activities; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the mayors of the counties of Maui, Kauai, Hawaii, and the city and county of Honolulu, and Hawaii's congressional delegation.
