SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

strongly urging the department of health and the University of hawaii Windward Community college to negotiate a land exchange so that windward community college will gain ownership of the land along the southern boundary of its campus.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the Department of Health holds a strip of land along the southern boundary of the University of Hawaii Windward Community College campus, adjacent to the Hale Akoakoa Student Center parking lot; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Department of Health plans to construct a long-term care housing facility for the Hawaii State Hospital along this strip of land; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaii State Hospital in Kaneohe does not have an updated long-range development plan in place to guide them with any present or future developments; and

 

     WHEREAS, this strip of land, which is contiguous to the Windward Community College campus, can best serve the educational needs of the students of Windward Community College; and

 

     WHEREAS, Bishop Hall, which was once renovated and occupied by the Hakipuu Learning Center, a public charter school with which Windward Community College once had a close educational relationship, is located on this strip of land and now stands vacant; and

     WHEREAS, Windward Community College holds a large piece of vacant land along the northwest corner of its campus, which the University of Hawaii is willing to offer to the Department of Health through a land exchange; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Health and the University of Hawaii Windward Community College are strongly urged to negotiate a land exchange so that Windward Community College will gain ownership of the land along the southern boundary of its campus; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawaii State Hospital shall include the proposed land exchange in discussions and development of the hospital's updated long range development plan; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Health and University of Hawaii submit a report on the land exchange and the Hawaii State Hospital's updated long range development plan to the Legislature at least 20 days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2015 and 2016; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Director of Health, Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii, Interim President of the University of Hawaii, and Chancellor of Windward Community College.
