SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING the united states military to return unused land that becomes available at bellows air force STATION to the state of hawaii.

 

 


                WHEREAS, established in 1917 as the Waimanalo Military Reservation, the area was renamed Bellows Field in 1933 after Lt. Franklin Barney Bellows. Bellows Field was made a permanent military post in July 1941, and is known today as Bellows Air Force Station; and

 

     WHEREAS, Bellows Air Force Station sits largely on ceded lands along the shoreline in Waimanalo; and

 

     WHEREAS, portions of Bellows Air Force Station were previously used as aircraft runways, a missile site, a landfill, munitions storage, a warfare training facility, and military recreation, but are no longer is used for some of those purposes; and

 

     WHEREAS, some land formerly used for military purposes at Bellows Air Force Station has been rehabilitated and restored, and other land has yet to be restored; and

 

     WHEREAS, in the past, some parcels of restored land unused by the military were returned to community use; and

 

WHEREAS, as the military use of land at Bellows Air Force Station continues to change, and as areas are rehabilitated and restored, new opportunities to return land to the community may arise; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2021, the House of Representatives concurring, that the United States military is requested to return unused land that becomes available at Bellows Air Force Station to the State of Hawaii for appropriate use by the community; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, members of Hawaii's Congressional delegation, United States Secretary of Defense, Commander of the United States Indo-Pacific Command, Governor, the director of the Department of Land and Natural Resources, and the chair of the Waimanalo Neighborhood board.
