A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to corrections.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that adult corrections officers are responsible for maintaining security and preventing violence in the State's jails and prisons.  The work of an adult corrections officer can be demanding, and it is imperative that adult corrections officers possess critical thinking and interpersonal skills.

The purpose of this Act is to ensure that newly hired adult corrections officers have the skills needed to maintain security and communicate efficiently by establishing a minimum education requirement.

SECTION 2.  Chapter 353, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§353-    Adult corrections officers; education requirement.  Every person hired as an adult corrections officer for the first time in the State after the effective date of this Act shall have, at minimum, a high school diploma."

SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2015.
