A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO SCHOOLS.
BE IT
ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Section 302A-1132, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by amending subsection (d) to read as follows:
"(d) As used in this section, "private
school" means an educational institution that teaches students in any
grade from kindergarten through grade twelve and that is [licensed or
accredited] either:
(1) Licensed;
(2) Licensed and
accredited by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools, Hawaii Council
of Private Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Western
Catholic Educational Association, Association of Christian Schools
International, or a [similarly recognized] similar entity recognized
by the Hawaii Council of Private Schools that meets or exceeds the
standards set by the aforementioned entities[.]; or
(3) Accredited by
the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools, Hawaii Council of Private
Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Western Catholic
Educational Association, Association of Christian Schools International, or a similar
entity recognized by the Hawaii Council of Private Schools that meets or
exceeds the standards set by the aforementioned entities, and annually submits health
and safety documentation to the Hawaii Council of Private Schools, or to the
Hawaii Catholic Schools if the school is an unlicensed but accredited Catholic
school that is not a full member of the Hawaii Association of Independent
Schools."
SECTION 2. Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.

Requires certain unlicensed but accredited private schools to annually submit health and safety documentation to the Hawaii Council of Private Schools, or Catholic Schools Hawaii, as the case may be, to meet the definition of "private schools" under the compulsory attendance law. (SD1)
