A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO EDUCATION.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§302A-    Cardiopulmonary resuscitation education.  (a)  Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, the department shall establish a program within the health education curriculum or physical education curriculum for students in grades nine through twelve, to provide instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

     (b)  Instruction provided under this section shall:

     (1)  Include hands-on practicing of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, unless a student is unable to participate in hands-on practicing by reason of disability; and

     (2)  Be consistent and uniform with current, nationally recognized emergency cardiac care standards, procedures, and guidelines promoted by entities such as the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, or another organization that has developed a nationally recognized instructional program."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
