A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO THE ACADEMY FOR CREATIVE MEDIA.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the academy for creative media within the larger University of Hawaii system offers education in a variety of media-based fields. The academy for creative media was first established at the University of Hawaii at Manoa as the State's first film school. The academy now supports courses across the entire University of Hawaii system. Despite being the flagship program, the academy for creative media has resided in temporary facilities since its inception. Recently, the University of Hawaii at Manoa administration identified the former PBS building located at 2350 Dole Street, Honolulu, Oahu, as a permanent home for the school's academy for creative media.
The legislature further finds that major upgrades are necessary for the Dole Street facility to fully meet the needs of a twenty-first century media program and a research-one educational program. Having access to newly refurbished and modern facilities will encourage Hawaii's creative youth to remain in the State and attract non-residents to pursue their education in Hawaii, which will ultimately benefit the State's film and media industries.
The purpose of this Act is to appropriate moneys for the renovation of the future home of the academy for creative media.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2017-2018 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 for renovations of soundstages and studio spaces within the facility at 2350 Dole Street, Honolulu, Oahu, for use by the academy for creative media.
The sums appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on May 12, 2059.
