HOUSE RESOLUTION
URGING THE DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING AND GENERAL SERVICES AND THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES TO WORK IN CONJUNCTION TO TRANSFORM THE BLACKTOP PARKING LOT IN FRONT OF IOLANI PALACE INTO A PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY ZONE.
WHEREAS, the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii recognizes Iolani Palace as having great cultural, architectural, and historical significance, being the only royal palace in the United States and designated as a National Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places; and
WHEREAS, Iolani Palace further serves as a reminder of Hawaii's origins, completed in 1882 and one of Hawaii's oldest buildings, it served as the royal residence of Queen Liliuokalani, the last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii and its people have the utmost responsibility to first, treat it with the proper respect and reverence that a national landmark deserves, and secondly to protect and preserve the Palace and its grounds for generations to come; and
WHEREAS, thousands of locals and visitors come to tour Iolani Palace annually, but regrettably are first greeted by an unsightly parking lot with parking meters that sorely detracts from the architectural magnificence of the Palace; and
WHEREAS, no other palace in the world has parking meters, and allowing people to continue to park on the Palace grounds is a desecration of the hallowed grounds of Iolani Palace and cannot be tolerated; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2018, that this body hereby strongly urges the Department of Accounting and General Services and the Department of Land and Natural Resources to work in conjunction to assess the feasibility of prohibition of parking at Iolani Palace; and a subsequent removal of the blacktop parking area, to be renovated into a pedestrian friendly zone to both compliment and accentuate the overall splendor of Iolani Palace; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, the State Comptroller and Director of the Department of Accounting and General Services, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the Chairperson of the Hawaiian Homes Commission, the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and the Chief Executive Officer of Kamehameha Schools, and each named civic club under the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs.
