HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

Honoring and congratulating mun lun school on their centennial anniversary.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii supports and acknowledges the importance of organizations that preserve the culture and values of Chinese Americans in a multi-cultural society; and

 

     WHEREAS, on May 4, 1904 two groups of men, Chun Nien Mo Hock Hui and Chun Nien Ke Lock Bo, unified with the mission of educating Chinese immigrants and was renamed Mo Hock Ke Lock Bo, incorporated on October 14, 1908; and

 

     WHEREAS, on February 4, 1911 Mo Hock Ke Lock Bo obtained the required charter from the Territory of Hawaii and founded Mun Lun School, who today, has the distinction of being the oldest and largest daily Chinese language school in Hawaii, most likely in the entire nation, with the distinction of being the last to have taught in Cantonese in the State; and

 

     WHEREAS, Mun Lun School's vision for the future is to pursue excellence in sustaining and preserving the Chinese language and culture in Hawaii by providing a place to learn and promote Mandarin, creating a viable standardized curriculum and assessment program with qualified instructors, and instilling pride and appreciation of the language, heritage and values in all of their students to pass on to future generations; and

 

     WHEREAS, Mun Lun School's students have achieved local and international academic accolades for the last four years winning the top honors in Chinese writing competitions in Beijing with six million participants from twenty-three different countries, and numerous kamaaina Chinese families being alumni; and

 

     WHEREAS, Mun Lun School has made long-lasting contributions to the Chinese society in Hawaii with their curriculum seeking to foster the application and appreciation of Chinese thought and behavior in each of its students on a day-to-day basis focusing on the Mandarin Language, providing language immersion through an open dialogue with their sister school in Zhongshan, China, and providing classes in art, music and tai chi; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, hereby honors and congratulates Mun Lun School, the oldest Chinese language institution in Hawaii, who plays a pivotal role in the cultural vitality of Chinatown and Hawaii's community at large, as it continually provides a place to learn and promote the Chinese language, heritage, culture, and values in our State, and on the occasion of their 100th Anniversary and expresses its appreciation for their contributions and offers its best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
