COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING HENK ROGERS, BLUE PLANET FOUNDATION, ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS, AND STAFF FOR EXEMPLARY COMMITMENT TO THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii is always proud to recognize those special individuals and organizations whose extraordinary achievements make a difference in the community and the world; and

WHEREAS, renewable energy and sustainability are of the utmost importance to our island state, which depends on imported petroleum for 90 percent of its energy needs, and to the nation and the world; and

WHEREAS, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and video-game visionary Henk Rogers, who brought the game "Tetris" from Russia to the United States and the rest of the western world, in 2007 founded BLUE PLANET FOUNDATION, a Honolulu-based nonprofit organization, whose mission is to end the use of fossil fuels; and

WHEREAS, in 2008, BLUE PLANET FOUNDATION convened a three-day summit meeting that involved leading national figures in science, government, the arts, and industry to frame a future of sustainability and to tackle the ongoing challenges of energy sustainability; and

WHEREAS, BLUE PLANET FOUNDATION has contributed to the sustainability awareness and positive, energy-saving lifestyle changes of Hawaii residents through educational programs, legislative efforts, and a multitude of public events; and

WHEREAS, BLUE PLANET FOUNDATION's recent achievements include replacing 100,000 traditional light bulbs with energy-efficient CFLs or LEDs, partnering with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement to assist in the installation of 100 solar water heaters on Hawaiian homestead homes, and producing the television program "Hawaii Home Energy Makeover 2," which offered viewers ideas that would improve Hawaii's bright energy future; and

WHEREAS, BLUE PLANET FOUNDATION's current goals include an energy-efficiency plan for Kauai, phase two of Molokai's "Go Green and Carbon Clean" campaign, and a project that enables donors to contribute to solar installations for schools and community centers; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Founder and Chairman Henk Rogers, Executive Director Jeff Mikulina, the Board of Directors, composed of former Hawaii Governors George Ariyoshi and Benjamin Cayetano, University of Hawaii at Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, Akemi Rogers, Maxine Burkett, Peter E. Crouch, Stanley W. Hong, Darren Kimura, Robert Lloyd, and David Williams, and the efforts of its entire team, BLUE PLANET FOUNDATION has contributed to the further greening of these islands; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, that this body hereby commends and congratulates Henk Rogers, BLUE PLANET FOUNDATION, its Board of Directors, and staff for their exemplary commitment to the Hawaiian Islands and its future generations, and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
