HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

congratulating the 2023 Hawaii Charter school teacher of the year and the 2023 teachers of the year for SCHOOL COMPLEXES IN THE Maui District, Hawaii District, and Central District.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, CERINA LIVAUDAIS was recently named the 2023 Hawaii Charter School Teacher of the Year; and

 

     WHEREAS, a science coach at the DreamHouse Ewa Beach Public Charter School, CERINA LIVAUDAIS is committed to cultivating the young minds of her students and teaching them not only the knowledge necessary to become successful but also important values and life skills needed to adapt to the changes of the modern world; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 2021, CERINA LIVAUDAIS was awarded the Cognizant Innovation in Computer Science Education Award, a national recognition of outstanding educators and individuals advocating for and expanding access to PK-12 computer science education; and

 

     WHEREAS, through the DreamHouse Ewa Beach Public Charter School computer science program, CERINA LIVAUDAIS guided her students to win the Congressional App Challenge for two consecutive years and participate in other national coding competitions, such as the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition; and

 

     WHEREAS, CERINA LIVAUDAIS aims to decolonize STEM education by incorporating guest speakers from local organizations such as Purple Maia to indigenize the way computer science is taught, particularly to native Hawaiian students; she believes in providing greater access to students' opportunities and wellness, especially their mental and emotional well-being; and

 

     WHEREAS, CORNELIO "CJ" ANCHETA was recently named the 2023 Teacher of the Year for the Maui District Hāna-Lahainaluna-Lānai-Molokai Complex; and

 

     WHEREAS, currently a secondary math teacher at Lahainaluna High School, CORNELIO "CJ" ANCHETA began his educational journey by earning Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Agricultural Engineering from the University of the Philippines at Los Banos; and

 

     WHEREAS, CORNELIO "CJ" ANCHETA also completed a professional development course on Problem-Based Learning at the University of Hawaii Maui College and in his second year of teaching, he completed a workshop on Project-Based Learning with Kupu Hou Academy, which inspired his passion and advocacy for Problem-Based Learning as a profound teaching strategy that enhances student learning by improving their 21st century learning skills in communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking; and

 

     WHEREAS, CORNELIO "CJ" ANCHETA has received numerous awards and honors in recognition of his dedicated leadership and outstanding contributions to the school community, including being selected as a Hawaii State Teacher Fellow in 2020, recipient of the 2020 Hawaii State Department of Education Innovation Grant, recipient of the Leadership and Achievement Award from the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce, and recipient of the Progress Award from the United Filipino Council of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, CHAYANEE BROOKS was recently named the 2023 Teacher of the Year for the Hawaii District Kaū-Keaau-Pāhoa Complex; and

 

     WHEREAS, CHAYANEE BROOKS has demonstrated a deep passion for teaching and learning while inspiring the students of Kaū High & Pahala Elementary School to strive for excellence; and

 

     WHEREAS, an accomplished academic and educator, CHAYANEE BROOKS has been an English teacher at Kaū High & Pahala Elementary School for the past nine years; she began her educational journey by receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Curriculum, Instruction, and Educational Technology from Chulalongkorn University and Master's degree in Language and Communication from the National Institute of Development Administration in Bangkok; and

 

     WHEREAS, CHAYANEE BROOKS is also currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Neuroscience at Mahidol University's Research Center for Neuroscience, Institute of Molecular Biosciences; and

 

     WHEREAS, a National Board Certified Teacher, CHAYANEE BROOKS has received numerous recognitions and honors for her remarkable passion and dedication to education, including being selected as a Hawaii State Teacher Fellow from 2020 to 2022 and a Pulitzer Center Teacher Fellow; and

 

     WHEREAS, CHAYANEE BROOKS is a strong advocate for assessments that empower student learning and success, has led professional development trainings for teachers throughout the State, and has authored various articles on educational assessments, feedback, and student voice; and

 

     WHEREAS, JARED HAIOLA was recently named the 2023 Teacher of the Year for the Central District Leilehua-Mililani-Waialua Complex; and

 

     WHEREAS, JARED HAIOLA's interest in education was inspired by his mother, a dedicated teacher at Kahuku Elementary School for 15 years, and several influential Kahuku High School teachers whose diligent support and innovative teachings motivated him to pursue his passion; and

 

     WHEREAS, a special education teacher of 22 years, JARED HAIOLA is committed to nurturing educational growth and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and believes being able to engage and enrich the lives of students is the true essence of teaching; and

 

     WHEREAS, JARED HAIOLA is also an advisor and coach of Haleiwa Elementary School's robotics team, which was founded in in 2016 to offer students an opportunity to develop problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership skills while advancing their efforts to participate in statewide competitions; under his guidance, the team has twice earned top honors in the Vex IQ Robotics Hawaii State Championships; and

 

     WHEREAS, in December of 2021, JARED HAIOLA received the Vex IQ Robotics Teacher of the Year Award for his exemplary leadership and dedication; he notes that watching his students develop their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education and become state champions in a prestigious robotics competition are highlights of his career; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2023, that this body hereby congratulates CERINA LIVAUDAIS, CORNELIO "CJ" ANCHETA, CHAYANEE BROOKS, and JARED HAIOLA for their outstanding accomplishments and much-deserved recognition as 2023 Teachers of the Year, and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all their future endeavors.
