STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

CONGRATULATING THE MARYKNOLL SCHOOL BOYS VARSITY I BASKETBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE DIVISION I STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

 

 

 

     WHEREAS, high school athletic programs enhance student engagement, improve health and academics, and allow students to benefit from positive mentorship, creativity in problem solving, teamwork, and many other skills that help them become responsible adults, productive citizens, and skilled professionals; and

 

     WHEREAS, as with any athletic team, coaching runs deeper than wins and losses and it is with great dedication that coaches inspire, guide, and nurture young athletes into champions who learn the value of persistence, personal growth, and teamwork; and

 

     WHEREAS, the MARYKNOLL SCHOOL BOYS VARSITY I BASKETBALL TEAM finished an outstanding season with a triumphant 50-34 win over Punahou School, making Maryknoll the reigning Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) Division I State Champion; and

 

     WHEREAS, the MARYKNOLL SCHOOL BOYS VARSITY I BASKETBALL TEAM compiled an impressive 30-2 record for the 2018-2019 season and won their last thirteen games; and

 

     WHEREAS, the 2019 State Championship is the first such title to be won by Maryknoll School in thirty-five years and embodies the fulfillment of a decades-long dream to rebuild Maryknoll School into an academic and sports powerhouse through a renaissance of its basketball program; and

 

     WHEREAS, this title was built on a rich legacy of exemplary coaches and players; the last championship was won in 1984 under the direction of then—Head Coach Tony Sellitto, who trained both the current Athletic Director Benjamin Valle and Head Coach Kelly Grant, the latter of whom now has two sons on this year's championship team; and

 

     WHEREAS, the MARYKNOLL SCHOOL BOYS VARSITY I BASKETBALL TEAM has also benefited greatly from the tireless efforts of Assistant Coaches AJ De Jesus, Matafaga Loa, David Lum, Kalia McGee, Tyler Reuter, and Devan Uyeda; their invaluable expertise and contributions were key components to the team's success; and

 

     WHEREAS, the 2018-2019 MARYKNOLL SCHOOL BOYS VARSITY I BASKETBALL TEAM includes Kalai Akaka, Tyler Brooke, Logan Dias, Reginald Eiland, Noah Furtado, Parker Grant, Payton Grant, Makoto Kamata (Most Outstanding Player HHSAA Division I Championship Tournament), Irvin Lin, Kahaweoakali‘aaloha McGee, Matthew "Nui" Pila, Nikolas Robben, Liko Soares, Marcus Tobin (HHSAA Division I Championship All-Tournament Team), and Sage Tolentino; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that this body congratulates and commends the members of the MARYKNOLL SCHOOL BOYS VARSITY I BASKETBALL TEAM, along with their coaches, teachers, staff, family, fans, and school alumni and administrators for their outstanding accomplishments, and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
