HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

HONORING COLONEL JOHN BATES, COLONEL GENE CASTAGNETTI, CAPTAIN GERALD COFFEE, CAPTAIN JAMES HICKERSON, AND lIEUTENANT gENERAL HENRY STACKPOLE III, RETIRED VETERANS WHO CONTINUE TO GIVE BACK TO HAWAII.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, March 14, 2013 marked the fortieth anniversary of the release of Vietnam Prisoners of War; and

 

     WHEREAS, this event gives us pause to reflect on the past and present contributions of all the heroes of the Vietnam War; and

 

     WHEREAS, the following individuals from the United States Navy and Marines are only a few of the projected 34,374 Vietnam veterans living in Hawaii who strive to serve their local communities and fellow wounded warriors; and

 

     WHEREAS, COLONEL JOHN BATES, a retired U.S. MARINE and a Vietnam veteran who was injured in the line of duty, continues to serve the military community by motivating and helping fellow wounded warriors at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, COLONEL GENE CASTAGNETTI, a retired U.S. MARINE, Silver Star recipient and Vietnam veteran, currently serves as the Director of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific; and

 

     WHEREAS, CAPTAIN GERALD COFFEE, a retired U.S. NAVY CAPTAIN and a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, served as Chairman of the State Civil Defense Advisory Board and fundraises for the Kapiolani Children's Miracle Network; and

 

     WHEREAS, CAPTAIN JAMES HICKERSON, a retired U.S. NAVY CAPTAIN and former prisoner of war in North Vietnam, served as the Vice Commander of the Pacific Missile Test Center before becoming Hawaii Area President of the United States Navy League and a board member for the Pacific Aviation Museum in Pearl Harbor; and

 

     WHEREAS, LIEUTENANT GENERAL HENRY STACKPOLE III, the former Commander of Marine Force Pacific/Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific, at Camp Smith and the ex-President of the Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies in Honolulu, remains active in the local community by serving on numerous community boards, being active in the Boy Scouts, and striving towards ensuring that wounded warriors returning from combat get the help they need; and

 

     WHEREAS, their selfless service and dedication to their country, community, and fellow service members deserves to be recognized; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, that this body hereby honors these Vietnam veterans for their continued service to the State of Hawaii.
