HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

recognizing brother noland for A Lifetime achievements and his impact on island music.

 

 


     WHEREAS, music has always played a central role in Hawaiian culture from ancient to contemporary sounds. Hawaiian music has been one of the most dynamic forces in maintaining and revitalizing the culture. Its history is as diverse as the history of its people. Hawaiians have given the world a unique and joyful reason to celebrate life through their music; and

 

     WHEREAS, born in Kalihi Palama, Brother Noland started playing music in 6th grade and wrote his first song the following year in grade 7. Since the debut of his first album "Speaking Brown" in 1979, Brother Noland has been known as a music innovator who captures the essence of Hawai‘i in his songs, and is often credited with the birth of Jawaiian music; and; and

 

     WHEREAS, Brother Noland's classic songs include: Coconut Girl; Are You Native; Kona Kai Opua; Hawaiian Man; Pua Lane; Backfire; When the Morning Comes; Little Lullaby, Jaime Lee; Ooh Baby; Pueo Tara and Me; and; and

 

     WHEREAS, among his many achievements he has won five Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, including 1987 Contemporary Album of the Year, 1991 Anthology Album of the Year, 2007 Reggae Album of the Year, the 2009 Moe Keale, Love is….Award, the 2013 Compilation of the Year. Additionally, his songs have been featured in major motion pictures; and; and

 

     WHEREAS, Brother Noland embodies the Aloha Spirit not only through his music, but also through volunteerism. He continues to be a symbol of inspiration and positive direction for the contemporary island music and musicians today as well as the rest of the local community, reminding us of one simple truth, "life is to love one another"; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, that this body hereby commends Brother Noland for his contributions to Hawaiian music, and extends its heartfelt aloha and best wishes for continued success in his career. Mahalo for your music, as it is your gift to the people of Hawai‘i and your fans worldwide.
