HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

congratulating aiea high school on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

 

 

 


WHEREAS, in 1954, the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare awarded a $500,000 grant to the Territory of Hawaii to construct a high school in the ahupuaa of Aiea, overlooking historic Puuloa (Pearl Harbor); and

 

WHEREAS, in 1954, territorial representatives traveled to New York to arrange for a $179,200 bond sale which would pay for the purchase of land for the planned high school; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1961, AIEA HIGH SCHOOL opened its doors to some 200 students from nearby communities, all of whom would no longer have to commute six miles away from home to earn a high school diploma; and

 

WHEREAS, from its humble roots of eight buildings rising from the red dirt of a former sugarcane field, AIEA HIGH SCHOOL's infrastructure has grown two-fold, and in the half-century since its inception, the school's annual enrollment has flourished six times over, to more than 1,200 bright young people; and

 

WHEREAS, AIEA HIGH SCHOOL's vision is "learning today to enlighten tomorrow", and its mission is "to develop fine citizens in a diverse and ever-changing world"; and

 

WHEREAS, AIEA HIGH SCHOOL takes pride in inspiring and nurturing the minds of its students, assisting each individual to develop integrity, respect, and a sense of civic responsibility; and

 

WHEREAS, AIEA HIGH SCHOOL is a pioneer in the field of sustainable technology, as the first Department of Education High School on Oahu to be powered by solar energy; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1999, AIEA HIGH SCHOOL was recognized as an outstanding State Blue Ribbon School, and Aiea High School's Nā Alii alumni are found in the highest levels of commerce, education, science, art, public service, and technology; and

 

WHEREAS, AIEA HIGH SCHOOL's long list of local, national, and international academic, athletic, music, and service awards brings great pride to the State of Hawaii, including the recent accomplishments of the Girls Wrestling Team winning three individual titles and the overall team title in the state wrestling championship tournament on March 3, 2012; now, therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2012, that this body hereby congratulates AIEA HIGH SCHOOL on the momentous occasion of its 50th Anniversary, and extends its best wishes for continued success in the years ahead.
