HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

commending the exemplary efforts of the American Diabetes Association Hawaii in combating diabetes in hawaii and providing diabetes education through its programs, community events, and medical expertise.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the people of the State of Hawaii are fortunate to have such committed, passionate professionals in the American Diabetes Association; and

 

     WHEREAS, the American Diabetes Association has served the people of the State of Hawaii for more than 25 years and helps more than twenty-four million Americans across the nation, with no less than 113,000 of them in the State of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, the American Diabetes Association Hawaii continues to provide an excellent and essential service by adhering to its mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes; and

 

     WHEREAS, if left unattended, diabetes will come to affect one out of every two Americans by the year 2050 and become one of the largest health epidemics in history; and

 

     WHEREAS, diabetes is a growing epidemic among the population of the State, and it is estimated that due to the ethnic diversity of the State, one of every two children will be diagnosed as diabetic by the age of 30; and

 

     WHEREAS, this year alone in Hawaii the increase in diabetes is projected to include 20,000 cases for Native Hawaiians with another 28,000 cases for the general population of Hawaii going undiagnosed; and

 

     WHEREAS, the American Diabetes Association Hawaii, committed to halting and reversing this trend, has contributed greatly to public education, awareness, and support through various events, including the Driving "Fore" a Cure Golf Tournament, Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes, and diabetes health fairs; and

 

     WHEREAS, every 4th Tuesday in March is the American Diabetes Association Alert Day, an annual, one-day "wake-up call" asking the American public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes; and

 

     WHEREAS, the events and programs conducted by the American Diabetes Association Hawaii have greatly contributed to the health of the people of Hawaii not only through education, but in advocacy as well as through support, and continue to do so with the utmost excellence and benevolence; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2012, that this body hereby commends the exemplary efforts of the American Diabetes Association Hawaii in combating diabetes in Hawaii and providing diabetes education through its programs, community events, and medical expertise; and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes for its continued service to the people of the State of Hawaii.
