HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

CONGRATULATING KAHUKU HIGH SCHOOL WE THE PEOPLE: THE CITIZEN AND THE CONSTITUTION TEAM FOR THEIR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND ACHIEVEMENT IN WINNING THE 2015 STATE COMPETITION.

 

 

 


WHEREAS, We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution program is a nationally acclaimed civic education instructional program that promotes civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s upper elementary and secondary students; and

 

WHEREAS, We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution program of Kahuku High School, consisting of fifteen high school seniors and a junior, were tested on the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights and their knowledge of democracy; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kahuku team won the State of Hawai’i Competition on January 21, 2015, and will represent the State at the National Finals on April 24-27, 2015, at George Mason University and Capitol Hill in Washington D.C.; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kahuku team, which has won the state title many times, and has previously placed in the top ten teams in the nation, is led by their advisor Jan Harney, who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in guiding the program to consistent success; and

 

WHEREAS, the Estimated Youth Turnout Rate from the National Exit Poll in 2014 of 18-29 year olds is 21.3 per cent, thus the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution program participant’s interest in government and parliamentary procedure gives our State hope for a greater turnout by the future voters in Hawai’i; now, therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawai’i, that this body congratulates and commends the Kahuku High School We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution team for their accomplishment in achieving the 2015 Hawai’i State Championship and representing the State in the National Finals.
