HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

COMMENDS AND CONGRATULATES ROCKNE FREITAS ON HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AND THE STATE OF HAWAII.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the University of Hawaii-West Oahu's establishment, it is fitting that the House of Representatives honors an individual who has served as an athletic and educational role model and dedicated a significant segment of his life to expanding educational opportunities for the children of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, ROCKNE FREITAS has devoted the past 35 years to the State of Hawaii as an educator, an educational executive, community statesman, and legislative and athletics consultant, touching thousands of lives and taking actions to assure that current and future generations in the State will have better and productive futures; and

 

     WHEREAS, a 1963 graduate of Kamehameha Schools, ROCKNE FREITAS attended Oregon State University as a recipient of a National Science Foundation Scholarship; and

 

     WHEREAS, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science with option in veterinary medicine and a minor in business administration in 1968, and would later earn a Master of Education (1983) and Doctor of Education degree (1995) from the University of Hawaii in Curriculum and Instruction with a cognate field in Educational Administration; and

 

     WHEREAS, professionally, ROCKNE FREITAS is as equally renowned for his 12 years as a professional football player for the National Football League's Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as he is for his nearly 35 years of contributions as an educational executive and community leader in the State of Hawaii; and

     WHEREAS, ROCKNE FREITAS has served in leadership roles that span the University of Hawaii System ranging from Assistant, Associate, and Interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at UH-Manoa, to UH System Vice President for Student Affairs and University Relations, to Community College Chancellor, and to Chancellor of the University of Hawaii-West Oahu; and

 

     WHEREAS, ROCKNE FREITAS also served in educational executive roles beyond the University of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, at Kamehameha Schools, he served as its Vice President and Director of Operations as well as the Director of the Education Program Expansion, Support, and Planning Division; he oversaw the campuses and garnered community support for the new K-12 neighbor island Kamehameha Schools on Maui and Hawai‘i Island; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 2004, ROCKNE FREITAS returned to the University of Hawaii as Chancellor of Hawaii Community College and posted a stellar record of accomplishments; and

 

     WHEREAS, he secured private-public partnership agreements that enabled the construction of a direct road to the campus, and a LEED Platinum facility for the University of Hawaii Center-West Hawaii as the first of four phases to transition from an educational center to a college campus; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, that this body hereby congratulates ROCKNE FREITAS for his achievements and extends its best wishes to him for a fruitful retirement and continued success in all future endeavors.
