HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the department of transportation to make top priority projects the installation of a left-turn-only lane on kalanianaole highway KOKO head-bound into the koko marina shopping center and the installation of a second right-turn lane from lunalilo home road ewa-bound onto kalanianaole highway.

 

 

 

     WHEREAS, motorists currently travel in two lanes in each direction on Kalanianaole Highway in the Hawaii Kai area near the Koko Marina Shopping Center; and

 

     WHEREAS, going in the Koko Head direction, motorists on Kalanianaole Highway intending to turn left into Lunalilo Home Road must either wait patiently behind other motorists turning left into the Koko Marina Shopping Center some five hundred feet before the intersection or engage in a risky maneuver by pulling out into the right lane and returning quickly to the left lane to make that turn; and

 

     WHEREAS, motorists turning left into the Koko Marina Shopping Center are also concerned about their safety as motorists line up behind them waiting to proceed on Kalanianaole Highway; and

 

     WHEREAS, motorists exiting Lunalilo Home Road ewa-bound have only one right-turn lane onto Kalanianaole Highway while one lane is available for those turning left Koko Head-bound and one lane for those continuing across Kalanianaole Highway to Koko Head Elementary School; and

 

     WHEREAS, the great majority of motorists exiting Lunalilo Home Road travel ewa-bound, and very few continue across Kalanianaole Highway toward Koko Head Elementary School; and

 

     WHEREAS, to reduce traffic congestion and enhance vehicular and pedestrian safety on Kalanianaole Highway in the Hawaii Kai area near the Koko Marina Shopping Center and Lunalilo Home Road, certain modifications to traffic flow are necessary; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2010, that the Department of Transportation is urged to make the following projects top priorities:

 

     (1)  Installation of a left-turn-only lane on Kalanianaole Highway Koko Head-bound into the Koko Marina Shopping Center; and

 

     (2)  Installation of a second right-turn lane from Lunalilo Home Road ewa-bound onto Kalanianaole Highway; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Transportation.
