HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

RECOGNIZING participants of the trans-pacific partnership negotiators meeting that was held in waikoloa from march 9 to march 14, 2015.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, in 1993, the United States hosted the first Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting on Blake Island, Washington, where President Bill Clinton and the APEC leaders pledged to make the Asia Pacific region a "voice" in the global economy; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 1994, the National Center for APEC was formed in Seattle, Washington to facilitate private sector involvement in APEC; and

 

     WHEREAS, APEC and its twenty-one participating economies of Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, the Russian Federation, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam are the largest intergovernmental trade organization in the Asia Pacific region and are dedicated to fostering peace, security, economic development, and prosperity; and

 

     WHEREAS, during the 1994 APEC summit in Bogor, Indonesia, the APEC leaders outlined long-range plans and goals for developing countries in the Asia Pacific region to establish a regional free trade agreement, which became known as the "Bogor Doctrine"; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) multilateral free trade agreement will increase trade and commerce between Asia Pacific economies to meet the goals and objectives of the Bogor Doctrine by 2020; and

 

     WHEREAS, APEC member economies that have participated in negotiations regarding the TPP include Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States, and Vietnam; and

 

     WHEREAS, in November 2011, the United States and the State of Hawaii hosted the 19th APEC Summit in Honolulu, where President Barack Obama and the APEC leaders decided to incorporate the Bogor Doctrine and advance the TPP free trade agreement; and

 

     WHEREAS, in order to shape the TPP and infuse it with high standards and values, the United States is taking the initiative to engage with TPP members; and

 

     WHEREAS, TPP negotiators met in Waikoloa from March 9 to March 14, 2015; and

 

     WHEREAS, the United States and State of Hawaii will play important roles in the TPP, and its negotiators should be welcomed to Hawaii with the spirit of Aloha; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, that this body recognizes the participants in the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiators meeting that was held from March 9 to March 14 in Waikoloa; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the President of the United States, the United States Secretary of State, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the United States Trade Representative, Trans-Pacific Partnership Chief Negotiator for the United States, the Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat, the Chair of the National Center for APEC, the Governor, the Mayor of each county, the President of the United States Chamber of Commerce, the Chair of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, the Chair of the African American Commercial Council of Hawaii, the Chair of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, the Chair of the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, the Chair of the Hawaii Indonesia Chamber of Commerce, the Chair of the Hawaii Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce, the Chair of the Hawaii Korean Chamber of Commerce, the Chair of the Hong Kong China Hawaii Chamber of Commerce, the Chair of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce, the Chair of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawaii, the Chair of the Kauai Filipino Chamber of Commerce, the Chair of the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce, the Chair of the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce, the Chair of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, the Chair of the Vietnamese-American Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, and the Chair of the Worldwide Uchinanchu Business Association Hawaii.
