RESOLUTION
URGING THE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO RENAME THE JAMES B. CASTLE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FIELD AFTER FORMER REPRESENTATIVE KEN ITO.
WHEREAS, James B. Castle High School, also known as Castle High School, is the largest of four high schools in the Windward District and serves a socio-economically diverse community from suburban Kaneohe to rural Kualoa; and
WHEREAS, Castle High School has a population of over 1,100 students from grades nine through twelve; and
WHEREAS, after fifty-six years in existence, pride for Castle High School is deeply ingrained in longtime Kaneohe residents; and
WHEREAS, Castle High School's football team, the Castle Knights, is an exemplary high school athletic program that gives young athletes to the opportunity to learn about the sport and apply themselves in a competitive setting against other high schools in the State; and
WHEREAS, the Castle Knights have achieved many accomplishments in Hawaii athletics, including winning the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship in 2002; and
WHEREAS, Castle High School and its football program continue to provide students quality education and important life skills, including teamwork, leadership, physical health, and wellness; and
WHEREAS, former Representative Ken Ito served in the State House of Representatives for over twenty-three years; and
WHEREAS, before beginning his work as a public servant in the House of Representatives, Representative Ito served in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1966, taught as a public school teacher at Kalani High School from 1970 to 1987, and served as a Department of Education vocational technical resource teacher in the Honolulu District Office from 1987 to 1994; and
WHEREAS, Representative Ito was elected to serve House District 48, beginning in January of 1995, and later, after redistricting, he served House District 49 until 2018; and
WHEREAS, while serving in the House of Representatives, Representative Ito served as the Chair of the House Committees on Education; Public Safety and Military Affairs; Water, Land and Ocean Resources; and Veterans, Military, & International Affairs, & Culture and the Arts, shepherding many measures through the committees he oversaw that became laws benefiting the people of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, Representative Ito has been of constant support for Castle High School, including serving as part of the James B. Castle Alumni & Community Association and James B. Castle High School Band-Aid Association, and earning the honor of being placed on the Castle Knights Athletic Wall of Honor in 2016; and
WHEREAS, Representative Ito was instrumental in securing funds for Castle High School's current football field; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, the Senate concurring, that the Board of Education is urged to rename the James B. Castle High School football field after former Representative Ken Ito in recognition of his work for the State, his community, and Castle High School; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education and the interim Superintendent of Education.
