HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

urging hawaiian electric company, INC., to return its call center operations to hawaii.

WHEREAS, Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc., and its subsidiaries are the electric utilities that provide electricity to approximately ninety-five per cent of the residents of Hawaii, and

WHEREAS, Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc., is substantially a monopoly in the State; and

WHEREAS, Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc., has transferred its call center operations to a company located on the mainland of the United States, where it is staffed by mainland residents; and

WHEREAS, the unemployment rate in Hawaii could be further reduced by providing new job opportunities for a Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc., call center located in the State; and

WHEREAS, because Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc., derives the vast majority of its profits from Hawaii's electric ratepayers, the company has a duty to offer every available employment opportunity to residents of Hawaii; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, the Senate concurring, that Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc., is urged to return its call center operations to Hawaii and offer increased job opportunities to Hawaii residents; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President and Chief Executive Officer of Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc., who in turn is requested to distribute copies to each member of the board of directors of Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc.
