A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO PRESERVATION.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the University of Hawaii is the custodian of a collection of three-dimensional relief maps of the seven primary Hawaiian islands. These maps were constructed in 1936 for the college of agriculture to show agriculture in the islands, and they have been used by the University as teaching tools for eight decades since. Over the years, frequent use has resulted in fading, wear, and damage to the maps. These antique maps are unique in their design and craftsmanship, and due to the likely destruction of the original molds, they cannot be reproduced. Accordingly, the University has undertaken a project to restore these artistic masterworks to their original luster by professionally cleaning, repairing, repainting, and preserving them.
The purpose of this Act is to appropriate moneys for the college of tropical agriculture and human resources of the University of Hawaii to restore and preserve its collection of historic relief maps of the Hawaiian islands.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2016-2017 for the restoration and preservation of historic relief maps of the Hawaiian islands.
The sum appropriated shall be expended by the college of tropical agriculture and human resources of the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2525.
