RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Selma Medlock Cheeley; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Selma Medlock Cheeley on February 10, 2012; and
WHEREAS,
Miss Selma was born on September 2, 1932, in Norcross, Georgia, a beloved
daughter of Robert David and Selma McDonald Medlock; and
WHEREAS,
she received a business degree from Georgia State University in 1954;
and
WHEREAS,
she cooked meals for the church and the Kiwanis Club and delivered meals and
clothing to Buford's poor and homebound; and
WHEREAS,
Miss Selma served two terms as president of the Buford Women's Club and was
president of the Georgia Garden Club in the early 1970's where she helped launch
a state-wide "Plant a Tree Day"; and
WHEREAS,
a woman of deep and abiding faith, Miss Selma was an active member of the Buford
First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School; and
WHEREAS,
she was united in love and marriage to Joseph E. Cheeley in 1952 and was blessed
with remarkable children; and
WHEREAS,
she gave inspiration to many through her high ideals, morals, and deep concern
for her fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding she
demonstrated to her family and friends were admired by others; and
WHEREAS,
she was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example she made of
her life, she made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous woman, Miss Selma will long be remembered for her
love of family and friendship, and this loyal daughter, mother, wife, and friend
will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing her.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
honoring the life and memory of Selma Medlock Cheeley and express their deepest
and most sincere regret at her passing.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Selma
Medlock Cheeley.
