A RESOLUTION


Commemorating the Keep Georgia Beautiful program and its 77 local affiliates who serve 79 percent of the population of the State of Georgia and recognizing January 25, 2010, as Keep America Beautiful Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Keep Georgia Beautiful, a program of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, was founded in 1978 as the first state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Keep Georgia Beautiful builds and sustains community environmental activities and behaviors for a more beautiful and environmentally aware Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Keep Georgia Beautiful and its 77 local Keep America Beautiful affiliates enhance the quality of life in Georgia by focusing on litter prevention, community beautification and improvement, and reducing the impact of waste on communities; and

WHEREAS, Keep Georgia Beautiful and local Keep America Beautiful affiliates conduct educational and community improvement activities and programs that change behaviors and attitudes toward the environment; and

WHEREAS, the success enjoyed by Keep Georgia Beautiful and its local programs is built upon strong partnerships with government, private businesses, schools, and citizen-volunteers at the grassroots level; and

WHEREAS, this past Spring, Keep Georgia Beautiful and its 77 affiliates successfully coordinated Great American Cleanup projects in 159 counties with the help of 80,500 volunteers who donated 285,000 hours to cleaning up this state; and

WHEREAS, Keep Georgia Beautiful and its programs empower local people to take responsibility for preserving and protecting Georgia's natural resources and environment.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commemorate the Keep Georgia Beautiful program and its 77 local affiliates whose 450,000 volunteers amassed 2 million volunteer man-hours and donated $27 million in benefits to Georgia communities over time.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of this body recognize January 25, 2010, as Keep America Beautiful Day at the state capitol.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the public and the press.
