A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and legacy of the Honorable Joe Mack Wilson and recognizing the Joe
Mack Wilson Park in Marietta, Georgia; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia lost one of its most distinguished citizens and public
servants on May 17, 1993, with the passing of the Honorable Joe Mack Wilson;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Wilson served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the
United States Navy, valiantly and courageously protecting his fellow Americans
during World War II; and
WHEREAS,
he diligently and conscientiously represented the citizens of Cobb County as a
member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1961 to 1988, where he
served with honor and distinction; and
WHEREAS,
during his nearly three-decade tenure with the House of Representatives, Mr.
Wilson served as chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, as a member
of the House Committees on Rules, Appropriations, and Legislative and
Congressional Reapportionment, and on the Blue Ribbon Committee on Higher
Education Financing and the University System's Laboratory and Equipment Needs
Committee; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Wilson served as the Chairman of the Cobb County legislative delegation and
helped lead the county through a challenging period of growth and development to
secure the county's position as a leading county in this state; and
WHEREAS,
a native of Cobb County, Mr. Wilson was responsible for numerous improvements in
Cobb County, including the development of the Platinum Triangle Community
Improvement District, doubling the funding for roads in Cobb County, the
development of Kennesaw State University, and the relocation of Southern
Technical Institute to Cobb County; and
WHEREAS,
an integral part of the Cobb community, Mr. Wilson owned and operated a
three-generation family owned business with his sons; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Wilson served two terms as the Mayor of the City of Marietta, utilizing his
great vision and leadership toward the city's beautification and economic
development; and
WHEREAS,
he was recognized with numerous honors and accolades for his service to Cobb
County and Georgia, including the Cobb County Citizen of the Year Award, the
Honorary Alumnus and Founder's Award of Kennesaw College, the Georgia Municipal
Association Public Service Award, the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Award,
the Georgia Mental Health Association Most Effective Legislator of the Year
Award, the Cobb County Bar Association Liberty Bell Award, and the Frank Simpson
Memorial Award; and
WHEREAS,
in honor of this distinguished gentleman's numerous contributions to Cobb County
and the City of Marietta, a park in Marietta has been named in his
memory.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
honoring the life and memory of the Honorable Joe Mack Wilson and recognize the
Joe Mack Wilson Park as a fitting tribute to principled statesman and an
effective Georgia leader.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of the
Honorable Joe Mack Wilson.
