A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the Honorable Kasim Reed; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Atlanta's own Mayor Kasim Reed has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that he has played in leadership and his deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Westwood High School, Mayor Reed was raised in the Cascade community of Atlanta and earned bachelor's and law degrees from Howard University; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Reed was inaugurated as the City of Atlanta's 59th mayor on January 4, 2010, and, since then, he has worked to improve public safety, create new opportunities for the city's youth, restore fiscal responsibility, and provide faster and more efficient customer service to residents; and

WHEREAS, no stranger to leadership and public service, Mayor Reed served as a member of the Georgia General Assembly for 11 years, devoting eight years to the Georgia Senate; and

WHEREAS, as a member of the Senate, Mayor Reed adeptly represented District 35 and served as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Special Judiciary Committee, Urban Affairs Committee, Higher Education Committee, Ethics Committee, Transportation Committee, and the State and Local Government Operations Committee; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Reed is chair of the Transportation and Communications Committee of the United States Conference of Mayors and chair of the Regional Transit Committee of the Atlanta Regional Commission; and

WHEREAS, with great pride, the Senate extends to their former colleague, Mayor Reed, heartfelt congratulations upon his successes thus far as the Mayor of Atlanta and looks forward to working with him towards creating a brighter tomorrow for all Georgians.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Mayor Kasim Reed on his many contributions to the City of Atlanta, Fulton County, and the State of Georgia and extend to him best wishes on many successful future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Honorable Kasim Reed.
