RESOLUTION
Recognizing
the life and legacy of Reverend Silas Johnson; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Reverend Silas Johnson was born in the mid 1800's to the red clay soil of
Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
a true servant of God, Reverend Johnson demonstrated a commitment to teaching
the Gospel, witnessing Christ through word and deed, and addressing the
physical, psychological, intellectual, and spiritual needs of others;
and
WHEREAS,
his courage and spiritual leadership played a vital role in the development of
Christian based churches throughout Oglethorpe County and the surrounding
communities; and
WHEREAS,
he founded Springhill Baptist Church in Philomath, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church
in Rayle, Lyonsville Baptist Church in Lyonsville, and White Rock Baptist Church
in Wilkes County, helping to foster spiritual growth in the region;
and
WHEREAS,
the unmatched spiritual assistance offered by Reverend Johnson was instrumental
in ordaining a large number of ministers and deacons and served as a source of
strength and direction for persons in all walks of life and from all economic
strata; and
WHEREAS,
he served as a shining example of God's righteous path, uniting black and white
Christians to praise the Lord together at a time when it was an unpopular idea,
and he played a vital role in educating those who were hungry for the Lord's
Word; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that this enduring example of God's message
of peace and love be recognized and congratulated for his innumerable good works
rendered on behalf of persons in
need.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize Reverend Silas Johnson for his exemplary fellowship and leadership in the name of God.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Springhill Baptist Church

in Lyonsville, and White Rock Baptist Church in Wilkes County.
