RESOLUTION
Recognizing
Historic Demorest School; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Historic Demorest School opened its doors in 1940 and had an initial enrollment
of 425 students, including 325 in grammar grades and 100 in high school;
and
WHEREAS,
the school's first faculty included 12 teachers with Mr. Robert H. Phelp serving
as superintendent; and
WHEREAS,
Historic Demorest School's last high school class was in 1952, after which time
the school was converted into a school for students in grades one through eight;
and
WHEREAS,
over the years numerous principals have led Historic Demorest School to success,
including Mr. Robert H. Phelp, Mr. W.W. Coffee, Mr. A.L. James, Mr. T.H.
Chambers, Mr. James Perry, Mrs. Sandra Bennett, Mrs. Alison Anglin, Mr. Warner
Hunnicutt, Mrs. MaryBeth Thomas, and Mr. Randolph Kent; and
WHEREAS,
for over more than 70 years, Historic Demorest School has maintained a proud
tradition of excellence in education through the outstanding efforts of the
dedicated and hard-working administration, faculty, and staff and the bright,
focused, and determined students; and
WHEREAS,
by creating a safe and respectful learning environment, Historic Demorest School
has enabled students to learn with confidence, experience success, and achieve
their maximum potential; and
WHEREAS,
the teachers, administration, and staff of Historic Demorest School have worked
diligently and conscientiously to ensure that students have access to the
training and resources necessary to succeed and foster positive relationships
and mutual respect; and
WHEREAS,
Historic Demorest School has been in existence longer than any other school
currently operating in Habersham County and, with great sadness, the school will
close its doors for the final time in June, 2011; and
WHEREAS,
Historic Demorest School and its dedicated faculty and staff have touched the
lives of thousands of students and uplifted the community, and its presence in
the Habersham County education arena will be sorely missed.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the amazing history of Historic Demorest School and commend
its numerous successful alumni for their contributions to their community and
this state.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Historic
Demorest School.
